Digital Totalitarianism explores internet censorship in China via 5 digital publications. How the Chinese government assert their power online is examined by looking at how memes and slang is used to beat censorships and what these censorships mean for the safety of their country. This project aims to educate and raise important questions on a very relevant societal subject. Each publication surfaces an overarching question; Is it time to end censorship in China?

The innocence of the first three publications should make us question why these bans are even in place, what are they doing to better the country? The 4th, Internet Maintenance Day, forms a question over why this important event should be censored whilst also displaying the failure of the governments censorship. The final publication, Censoring Contagion, is the most important in answering my question as it demonstrates a truly harmful product of censorship and hopefully provides a conclusion to the project; end censorship in China.
